The Patient’s Journey

Your First Visit Guide

A Gentle Introduction to Your Journey

Stepping into a Traditional Chinese Medicine clinic for the first time is a thoughtful beginning — not an unfamiliar one. This guide walks you through everything to expect at Tong Ren Tang Gulf — from your arrival and consultation to your treatment, recovery, and the most common questions we hear from new patients.

Chapter I

Before Your Visit

Preparing to Arrive

A few small preparations help your physician understand you more completely — and help you feel at ease from the moment you step through our door.

We recommend booking your appointment in advance by phone, email, or through our website. On your first visit, please arrive ten to fifteen minutes early so that our front desk can help you complete a brief patient registration form and put any questions to rest before your consultation begins.

Bring with you a record of any current medications, recent medical reports, imaging results, or relevant laboratory tests. If you are following treatment from a Western physician or another specialist, this information allows our doctors to build a fuller picture of your health — Traditional Chinese Medicine is beautifully compatible with modern care, and our physicians read both languages fluently.

On the morning of your appointment, please eat lightly — a small meal two to three hours beforehand is ideal. Avoid heavy foods, strong coffee, alcohol, and intense exercise. Kindly refrain from brushing your tongue or drinking beverages that could stain it within the hour before arrival, as tongue observation is one of our most important diagnostic tools.

i
What to Bring

Emirates ID, current medications, recent medical reports, and insurance details if applicable.

ii
What to Wear

Loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the arms, legs, and back.

iii
What to Avoid

Heavy meals, caffeine, alcohol, tongue-staining drinks, and vigorous exercise beforehand.

iv
When to Arrive

Ten to fifteen minutes before your scheduled appointment, for a relaxed beginning.

Chapter II

The Consultation

The Four Pillars of Diagnosis

No blood tests. No scans. Just two centuries of diagnostic wisdom, refined into four quiet acts of attention.

Your first consultation lasts approximately forty-five minutes to one hour. Rather than beginning with a questionnaire or a blood draw, a Traditional Chinese Medicine physician begins with presence — reading the body through the Four Pillars of Diagnosis, a practice passed down and refined over more than two thousand years.

Each pillar is a different window onto the same landscape — your constitution, your balance, the flow of qi through your meridians. Together, they reveal not only where the illness is, but why it has arrived, and how the body wishes to heal.

Wàng
Observation

Your physician observes complexion, posture, and — most importantly — the tongue, whose colour and coating speak volumes about internal balance.

Wén
Listening

The quality of your voice, breath, and other subtle sounds of the body offer insight into the state of the organs and energy system.

Wèn
Inquiry

A thoughtful conversation about sleep, digestion, temperature, emotions, menstruation, and daily habits — the hidden geography of health.

Qiè
Pulse Reading

Twenty-eight distinct pulse qualities, read at three positions on each wrist — the signature diagnostic art of the Chinese physician.

From these observations, your physician will explain their findings, discuss your treatment options, and — with your agreement — design a personalised plan. This may include acupuncture, Tui Na, cupping, moxibustion, herbal prescriptions, or a combination of modalities. You will always be told what to expect, what it will cost, and how many sessions are recommended, before any treatment begins.

Chapter III

During Treatment

What You Will Feel

Treatment at our clinic is gentle, precise, and deeply restorative. Most patients close their eyes — and many fall asleep.

You will be guided to a private treatment room where you may change into a treatment gown if required. Our rooms are quiet, warm, and softly lit. Soft traditional music plays in the background; the air carries the faintest scent of herbs.

Depending on your treatment plan, you may receive one or more of the following therapies during your visit.

i 針灸
Acupuncture

Fine, sterile, single-use needles are inserted at specific points. Most patients feel little more than a whisper of sensation — a warmth, a gentle tingle, or nothing at all. Needles remain in place for roughly twenty to thirty minutes while you rest.

ii 推拿
Tui Na Massage

A firm, rhythmic therapeutic massage along the meridians. Stronger than Swedish massage and more precise than shiatsu — intended to move, not merely to soothe.

iii 拔罐
Cupping

Glass cups, warmed briefly, create gentle suction on the skin. The sensation is that of a slow stretch or a light pull. Temporary circular marks are entirely normal and fade within a few days.

iv 艾灸
Moxibustion

The warming of specific points with smouldering mugwort. You will feel a comforting, penetrating heat — never a burn. Many describe it as one of the most relaxing experiences of all.

All needles are sterile, individually packaged, and used only once. Our clinics operate under the strict hygiene and safety standards of the Dubai Healthcare City Authority. At any point during your treatment, you may speak with your physician or practitioner — comfort and communication are essential to every session.

Chapter IV

After the Session

Caring for Yourself at Home

Healing continues long after you leave the treatment room. A few simple practices will help your body integrate the work.

Once your session is complete, you may feel unusually relaxed, gently energised, or softly sleepy — all natural responses to a treatment that has moved qi and quieted the nervous system. Take your time to sit up, sip a glass of warm water, and allow yourself a few moments of stillness before returning to the day.

Over the first twenty-four hours, some patients experience a mild healing reaction: slight fatigue, a light headache, or temporary soreness near acupuncture points. These are gentle signs that the body is rebalancing itself, and they typically pass within a day.

Rest when you can.
Avoid strenuous exercise, cold exposure, and late nights for the rest of the day.
Stay warm and hydrated.
Drink warm — not cold — water. Keep the treated areas protected from draughts and air conditioning.
Eat gently.
Choose nourishing, easy-to-digest foods. Avoid alcohol, raw foods, and iced drinks for at least twelve hours.
Take any herbal prescriptions as advised.
Your physician will guide you on timing, preparation, and duration.
Keep your follow-up appointment.
Most conditions respond best to a carefully paced series of sessions rather than a single visit.

If you have any concerns in the hours or days following your treatment, please contact the clinic directly — your physician is always a phone call away.
