Why Your Shoulder Hurts — Common Causes That Respond to Acupuncture
Shoulder pain limits daily activities, from reaching overhead to sleeping well. Shoulder injuries are common in busy Dubai clinics – from acute sports injuries to degenerative conditions – and involve the shoulder joint – the most mobile ball-and-socket joint in your body – which depends upon a complex network of rotator cuff tendons — a group of muscles and ligaments — plus the joint capsule to maintain full range of motion. When inflamed, torn, or stiff, pain and signs of reduced movement are unavoidable.
Six shoulder pain conditions respond well to our Dubai treatment protocols:
In frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), the capsule of the shoulder joint thickens and adheres to itself – causing pain and restricted movement. Frozen shoulder progresses through three stages: freezing, frozen, and thawing. Improving frozen shoulder with acupuncture reduces pain and improves function by 76.4% when combined with physiotherapy for frozen shoulder.
Rotator cuff tear, tendonitis, and shoulder impingement — these rotator cuff injuries involving partial tears and impingement – may be caused by prolonged overhead activity, muscular imbalance, trauma, or ageing. A 2024 systematic review identified that acupuncture was significant in relieving pain, stiffness, and symptoms.
Chronic inflamation relating to shoulder dislocation, shoulder arthritis, and bursitis – occurs within the joint itself or bursae of fluid-filled sacs around the joint, with a significant reduction in the pain from needle insertion within 10 minutes noted for shoulder bursitis. Tendonitis and recovery from dislocation also show positive response from Beijing-trained, evidence-based acupuncture points.
TCM Diagnostic Framework
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, shoulder pain falls into distinct diagnostic patterns, each requiring a different acupuncture protocol. Wind-Cold-Damp Bi Syndrome presents as pain worsening in cold or damp weather — treated with warming needle acupuncture and moxibustion. Qi-Blood Stasis involves fixed, sharp pain at specific points following injury — treated with electroacupuncture and cupping. Liver-Kidney Deficiency manifests as chronic, dull shoulder pain in patients over 50 — addressed through constitutional acupuncture combined with herbal medicine. Our TCM consultation begins with pulse diagnosis, tongue assessment, and detailed palpation to determine your pattern.
