Acupuncture vs Conventional Pain Management — What the Evidence Shows
How does acupuncture compare with conventional pain management? The clinical evidence paints a clear picture. Acupuncture stimulates the body’s own healing response through specific acupuncture points along meridians, while pharmaceutical approaches block pain signals chemically — each carrying different long-term implications for your wellness and overall well-being.
Acupuncture vs Dry Needling — What’s the Difference?
Both use thin needles, yet there are clear differences between dry needling and acupuncture. Acupuncture is based on the theories of TCM with meridian based diagnosis and it treat a range of health conditions including chronic pain, fertility and mental health issues by regulating the flow of body energy between designated acupuncture points. Dry needling can be used with a diagnosis of specific targeted muscular trigger points to elicit localized pain relief without a formal diagnosis.
In Dubai, for a practitioner to provide acupuncture, there is a requirement for Dubai Health Authority licensing and a formal university education course in Traditional Chinese Medicine and clinical practice. Approaches to regulation on dry needling is more varied so the practitioners’ experience should be taken into account.
Clinical evidence shows acupuncture is effective for pain relief in many health conditions. This meta-analysis of 17,922 patients aged 3-80 which was published in JAMA Internal Medicine reported patients had experienced pain relief for chronic health issues for periods between 4 weeks and 6 months after their treatments in addition to significant pain relief for 3-4 weeks during treatment, compared to those under sham acupuncture and no-treatment control groups.
