SP6 — Sanyinjiao 4 finger-widths above inner ankle bone

Location

Place your pinky finger on the inner ankle bone (medial malleolus). Four finger-widths up, just behind the shin bone (tibia). You will feel a slight dip.

Technique

Apply firm circular pressure with your thumb. Rotate slowly clockwise for 2-3 minutes on each leg. Moderate pressure — it should feel sore but not painful.

Timing

Daily during the luteal phase (7-10 days before your period). Continue during menstruation for acute relief. Best done while seated with feet flat.

Effect

Improves pelvic blood flow, regulates the spleen/kidney/liver meridians. This is the single most-used point in gynecological acupuncture worldwide.

LI4 — Hegu Between thumb and index finger web

Location

In the fleshy web between your thumb and index finger. Squeeze these two fingers together — the point is at the highest point of the muscle bulge.

Technique

Pinch between your opposite thumb and index finger. Press firmly and hold for 1-2 minutes per hand. A deep, achy sensation means you found the right spot.

Timing

Use anytime during pain episodes. Particularly effective within the first 30 minutes of cramp onset. Can be done discreetly at work or school.

Effect

Triggers endorphin release for general pain relief. Known as the “master pain point” in TCM. Influences the large intestine meridian, which runs through the lower abdomen.

Avoid during pregnancy. LI4 has strong downward-moving energy and is contraindicated in pregnant women.
3

CV4 — Guanyuan 3 finger-widths below navel

Location

Measure 3 finger-widths (about 4cm) directly below your belly button along the midline of the abdomen. The point is on the Conception Vessel meridian.

Technique

Place your palm flat over the point. Apply gentle, warm pressure for 3-5 minutes. Combine with a warm compress or hot water bottle on top of your hand for enhanced effect.

Timing

Best used at the onset of cramping or as a preventive measure during the luteal phase. Most effective when combined with heat. Lie down in a comfortable position.

Effect

Warms the lower abdomen and uterus, reduces cramping and spasm. Tonifies kidney yang energy. This is the point most commonly treated with moxibustion in clinic.
