Cupping Marks Color Guide

Your cupping marks tell a story. Select a color below to learn what your body is communicating through Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis.

Light Pink / Red Marks

Normal & Expected

TCM Diagnosis

Light pink marks indicate mild qi stagnation with good underlying circulation. The body’s energy (qi) and blood are flowing relatively well in this area. This is the most common result for first-time patients or those receiving maintenance treatments.

Duration

These marks typically fade within 1 to 3 days. Many patients find they disappear by the next morning, especially in areas with strong blood flow.

Aftercare Advice

  • Keep the area warm and avoid cold drafts for 4-6 hours
  • Drink warm water to support circulation
  • Avoid hot showers or baths for 2-3 hours post-treatment
  • Light activity is fine; avoid intense exercise for 24 hours

Medium Red Marks

Normal & Expected

TCM Diagnosis

Medium red marks point to moderate qi and blood stagnation. This is the most common response in areas carrying tension or dealing with chronic discomfort. It signals that stagnant energy is being drawn to the surface and released—exactly what the treatment intends to do.

Duration

Expect these marks to last 3 to 5 days. They will gradually shift from red to a lighter pink before fading completely. The rate depends on your circulation and hydration.

Aftercare Advice

  • Stay hydrated—aim for 8+ glasses of warm or room-temperature water
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours (they slow recovery)
  • Keep the area covered and away from wind or air conditioning
  • Gentle stretching can help the area release further
  • A warm compress may help if the area feels tender

Dark Red / Purple Marks

Monitor & Care

TCM Diagnosis

Dark red or purple marks indicate significant blood stagnation and deep-seated blockage. In TCM, this suggests the area has been holding tension, toxins, or poor circulation for an extended period. Common in patients with chronic pain, long-standing injuries, or high physical stress. The body is working hard to clear old stagnation.

Duration

These marks generally last 5 to 8 days, sometimes longer. They will progress through stages: dark purple to reddish-brown to light pink before fully clearing. Subsequent sessions in the same area typically produce lighter marks as stagnation clears.

Aftercare Advice

  • Rest the treated area—avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for 48 hours
  • Drink plenty of warm water (at least 10 glasses over the next 24 hours)
  • Eat light, warm foods; avoid raw, cold, or greasy meals
  • Apply arnica cream or a warm herbal compress if approved by your practitioner
  • Get adequate sleep—the body does its deepest repair during rest
  • Follow-up sessions are recommended to continue clearing stagnation

Very Dark Purple Marks

Monitor & Care

TCM Diagnosis

Very dark purple marks indicate severe, chronic blood stagnation and accumulated cold or dampness in the tissues. In TCM theory, this reflects long-term blockage of qi and blood—often seen in areas with old injuries, chronic inflammation, or prolonged muscular tension. While dramatic in appearance, this response shows the treatment is reaching deep into problem areas.

Duration

These marks can take 7 to 14 days to fully fade. They progress from deep purple to brownish-red, then to yellow-green (similar to a healing bruise) before clearing. Each subsequent cupping session in the same area should produce progressively lighter marks.

Aftercare Advice

  • Prioritize rest for 48-72 hours—your body is processing significant stagnation
  • Hydration is critical: warm water, herbal teas, and bone broth are ideal
  • Avoid cold exposure entirely (cold drinks, swimming, cold weather without cover)
  • Consider an Epsom salt bath (warm, not hot) 24 hours after treatment
  • Discuss a treatment schedule with your TCM doctor—a series of sessions will progressively reduce stagnation
  • Contact our clinic if marks haven’t begun to lighten after 10 days

No Visible Marks

Positive Sign

TCM Diagnosis

No marks or very faint pinkness that fades within minutes indicates healthy qi and blood circulation in the treated area. There is little to no stagnation present. This is common in patients who receive cupping regularly, maintain an active lifestyle, or are being treated in areas without underlying issues. It can also occur with lighter suction techniques such as flash or facial cupping.

Duration

Any minor redness disappears within minutes to 1 hour. No residual marks remain. This is typical for maintenance treatments and facial cupping sessions.

Aftercare Advice

  • Standard aftercare applies: stay hydrated and avoid cold exposure
  • Your body is responding well—continue with your wellness routine
  • Regular maintenance sessions can help keep circulation strong
  • This is a positive sign of good health in the treated area

Mark Progression Timeline

How cupping marks typically fade over the course of 1-2 weeks, from treatment day to full recovery.

Day 0 — Treatment Day

Marks appear immediately after cup removal. Colors range from light pink to deep purple depending on the level of stagnation in each area. Mild tenderness is normal.

Days 1-2

Light marks may already be gone. Medium marks begin to soften. Dark marks maintain their intensity but tenderness decreases. Keep the area warm and hydrated.

Days 3-5

Medium red marks fade to light pink. Dark marks shift from purple toward reddish-brown. The body is actively reabsorbing and clearing the drawn-up stagnation.

Days 5-8

Most marks have faded significantly. Dark marks transition to a yellowish-brown tone, similar to the final stage of bruise healing. Skin returns to normal texture.

Days 8-14

All marks fully resolved. Skin returns to its natural tone. The treatment area should feel lighter, with improved range of motion and reduced tension compared to before treatment.
